BRAND · NUTRIENT WALL AND SOIL FLOOR

Start in the right bag, feed from one chart, and stop guessing.

FoxFarm is a soil and bottle family many growers already know by name. Here is how the bags and bottles on our shelf fit together, and where each one belongs in a small indoor or porch grow.

FoxFarm Ocean Forest potting soil bags on the soil floor at Green Zone Grow Shops in Worcester

How we stock it at Green Zone

FoxFarm lives in two places in the store. The liquid trio and the Bush Doctor bottles sit in bay 4 of the nutrient wall. The bags, Ocean Forest, Happy Frog, Coco Loco and Light Warrior, are on the soil floor, and Happy Frog also hangs on the houseplant rack.

We stock the family because it covers a whole container grow from one brand: a seed starter, two or three potting soils, a feed for each stage, and a few fix-it bottles. Most of the questions we get at the counter are about pairing. Which bag goes with which bottle, and when do you start feeding a soil that already has food in it? Our job is to match the bag to how you water, then hand you one schedule to follow instead of five.

The lineup

Ocean Forest potting soil

A ready-to-use container soil built from aged forest products, sphagnum peat moss, earthworm castings, bat guano, fish emulsion and crab meal. FoxFarm says there's no need for nitrogen feeds at first.

Where it fits: Final containers; growers happy to wait before feeding

Happy Frog potting soil

A container soil amended with soil microbes, earthworm castings, bat guano and aged forest products.

Where it fits: Containers indoors or out, houseplants

Coco Loco potting mix

A coco-based Bush Doctor mix. FoxFarm says plants in it won't need water as often as in a usual potting mix.

Where it fits: Growers who want a coco feel from a bag; hanging baskets and containers

Light Warrior seed starter

A seed starter with soil microbes and earthworm castings, for germination, cuttings and new starts.

Where it fits: Seeds and cuttings, before the first transplant

Grow Big

Liquid concentrate for vegetative growth, made with a low pH to stay stable in storage.

Where it fits: Veg

Big Bloom

Liquid made with bat guano and earthworm castings; FoxFarm says it can be used through all stages.

Where it fits: Every stage, alongside the other two

Tiger Bloom

A phosphorus feed that also carries nitrogen, for soil or hydro, from the first signs of flowering through harvest.

Where it fits: Flower

Bush Doctor Microbe Brew

A liquid microbial inoculant for the root zone, in soil or hydro.

Where it fits: Veg and bloom

Bush Doctor SledgeHammer

A rinse made from yucca saponins that moves water through the mix and clears fertilizer buildup.

Where it fits: When salts build up

Bush Doctor Boomerang

FoxFarm's "comeback formula": soil microbes plus soluble nutrition for plants knocked back by stress.

Where it fits: Recovery, or as a veg supplement

Bush Doctor Bembé

Sugars and nutrients that also feed the microbes in the root zone.

Where it fits: From the first buds

Beastie Bloomz

A high-phosphorus soluble fertilizer for mid to late flowering, in soil, soilless or hydro.

Where it fits: Mid to late flower

How it fits your grow, in 3 steps

Step 1. Pick the bag by how you water.

Start seeds and cuttings in Light Warrior, then move them up. For the final pot, most growers at our counter choose between Ocean Forest and Happy Frog. Both go straight from the bag into a container. Ocean Forest comes loaded enough that FoxFarm says to skip nitrogen feeds at first. If you tend to overwater, or want longer gaps between drinks, look at Coco Loco. Whatever the bag, water by the weight of the pot, not the calendar.

Step 2. Follow one chart, starting low.

FoxFarm publishes feeding schedules for the trio. Grow Big carries veg, Tiger Bloom takes over at the first signs of flowering, and Big Bloom runs alongside both. Follow the label for amounts, and start at the low end. FoxFarm itself says to adjust the rate to how the plant responds. In a peat or soil mix fed from bottles, keep input pH around 6.2 to 6.8.

Step 3. Add a Bush Doctor bottle only for a reason.

Microbe Brew is the routine root-zone add. SledgeHammer is for when runoff tells you salts are building. Boomerang is for a plant that got knocked back. Bembé starts at the first buds. Change one thing at a time, then let new growth give you the verdict in about 7 to 10 days. Move one knob.

Who it's for, and who it's not for

A good fit if

  • You want a bag-and-bottle system you can buy in one trip and follow from a printed chart.

  • You grow in containers, indoors or on the porch, and want soil that's ready straight out of the bag.

  • You like having a fix-it bottle on hand (SledgeHammer, Boomerang) without switching brands mid-run.

Not the right fit if

  • You want a soil you build once and keep up with top dress and plain water. That's the BuildASoil system; see our BuildASoil page.

  • You want a two- or three-part salt line you dial in by EC. The nutrient wall has several; ask us which one fits your setup.

  • You don't plan to measure anything. Three bottles is still a feeding program, and it rewards a pH pen and a runoff cup.

Common mistakes we help people avoid

Feeding Ocean Forest hard right after transplant. The bag already carries food, and FoxFarm says nitrogen feeds can wait at first.

Running the full chart on day one. The schedule is a ceiling to work toward, not a starting line. Start lower and follow the label.

Packing the pot. FoxFarm's planting directions say to press the soil firmly around the plant but not to pack it tightly. A packed pot holds too much water and too little air.

Mixing Beastie Bloomz dry with other powders, or spraying it. FoxFarm says not to mix solubles together in dry form and not to use it as a foliar spray.

Reaching for a flush every time a leaf turns. A runoff cup is not a verdict. It's a clue. Read the trend over a few waterings before you grab SledgeHammer.

Frequently asked questions

Ocean Forest or Happy Frog: which one should I buy?

Both go straight from the bag into a container. Ocean Forest is the one FoxFarm says needs no nitrogen feeds at first, so it suits growers who want to hold off on bottles early. Happy Frog is amended with soil microbes, and it's the bag we keep on the houseplant rack. Tell us how often you water and we'll point you to one.

Do I need all three bottles?

FoxFarm designs Grow Big, Big Bloom and Tiger Bloom to work together and sells them as a trio. If you're buying one bottle to start, tell us your soil and your stage and we'll help you pick.

Can I use the trio in coco or hydro?

Tiger Bloom carries both soil and hydro directions on FoxFarm's page, and FoxFarm pairs its liquids with its own soil mixes, Coco Loco included. In coco and other soilless setups the pH lane is lower, around 5.8 to 6.2.

What does SledgeHammer do?

It's a rinse made from yucca saponins. FoxFarm says it moves water through soil and soilless mixes and clears fertilizer buildup. Use it when the trend says salts are building, not as a reflex.

Is Beastie Bloomz a liquid?

No. It's a dry soluble fertilizer you mix into water, made for mid to late flowering.

Do you carry every size?

Not every size of every product is in at once. Call (508) 459-9609 to check a specific bag or bottle before you drive.
