Post-harvest wash methods
Budwash Guide
GROWER GUIDE
Green Zone Grow Shops • Worcester Massachusetts
Who this is for
Growers finishing an outdoor run who want a clean harvest and have light surface dust, debris, or early powdery mildew pressure. If you split a cola and see brown or grey mold inside, discard it. Washing cannot fix internal rot. If you can see powdery mildew on the flower, a wash may remove some surface spores but is not a guarantee. When in doubt, throw it out.
Tools
Three to four clean five gallon buckets
RO or clean tap water
Thermometer. Recipes A and B: room-temperature water, about 65 to 75°F. Recipe C: 78 to 90°F, the brand's range. Rinse buckets: room temperature.
Drying rack or lines and towels underfoot
Shears and nitrile gloves
Recipe A: Lemon and baking soda wash
Use when: General cleanliness, light outdoor dust, ash, pollen, and minor surface PM pressure.
Bucket setup
Bucket 1 wash: 5 gal water + 1/2 cup lemon juice + 1/2 cup baking soda
Bucket 2 rinse: 5 gal clean water
Bucket 3 rinse: 5 gal clean water
Steps
Rough trim off fans and keep branches manageable.
Dunk in Bucket 1 and gently agitate for about 30 seconds.
Lift and drip 2 to 3 seconds, then rinse in Bucket 2 for 10 to 15 seconds.
Final rinse in Bucket 3 for 10 to 15 seconds.
Hang to drip dry with gentle airflow.
Replace wash water whenever it looks dirty.
Recipe B: Hydrogen peroxide wash
Use when: You grew near powdery mildew and want a disinfecting wash aimed at surface spores. Use only a brief dip and keep water fresh.
Standard 3% household peroxide
Bucket 1 wash: 5 gal water + 1 cup (237 ml) of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Then two rinse buckets with clean water.
If using 34% concentrated peroxide
Replace the 1 cup of 3% with about 21 ml of 34% per five gallons.
3% amount
1/2 cup: 34% equivalent per 5 gal: ~10.5 ml
1 cup: 34% equivalent per 5 gal: ~21 ml
1 1/2 cups: 34% equivalent per 5 gal: ~31 ml
Wear gloves and eye protection. Always add concentrate to water. Never mix peroxide with lemon and baking soda in the same bucket.
Steps
Rough trim off fans.
Dunk in Bucket 1 and gently agitate for about 30 seconds.
Rinse in Bucket 2 for 10 to 15 seconds.
Final rinse in Bucket 3 for 10 to 15 seconds.
Hang to drip dry with gentle airflow.
Recipe C: Doctor Zymes dip
Use when: You prefer a fermentation based, OMRI listed product as a one bucket post harvest dip.
Dip bucket: 5 gal warm water at 78 to 90°F + 1 cup (8 oz) The Amazing Doctor Zymes Eliminator
Dip and gently agitate for about 30 seconds for full contact.
Don't rinse. Doctor Zymes says rinsing washes the product back off the flower.
Hang to drip dry, then proceed to drying.
Mix rate and the no rinse step come straight from Doctor Zymes (October 2026). The water temperature is from their tip sheet.
Optional two stage sequence
Use only when you have light PM plus outdoor grime and can handle buds gently.
Peroxide wash, Recipe B, about 30 seconds.
Lemon and baking soda wash, Recipe A, about 30 seconds.
Rinse 1, clean water, 10 to 15 seconds.
Rinse 2, clean water, 10 to 15 seconds.
Why this order: Peroxide addresses surface PM spores first. Lemon and soda then lift dust and residue. Two clean rinses clear carryover.
Trade offs: More handling means slightly higher trichome loss risk and over hydration. For beginners or minimal contamination choose one wash recipe and two rinses.
Safety and when not to wash
If a cola shows brown or grey mold inside, discard it. Washing cannot make internally moldy bud safe.
If mildew has colonized inside the flower, do not smoke it.
Do not combine peroxide with lemon and soda in the same bucket. If you run both, rinse between steps.
With 34% peroxide wear gloves and eye protection. Always add concentrate to water.
Never use bleach or strong acids. Use clean water only.
Drying after a wash
Pat stems lightly, then hang in a room at 60 to 70°F and 50 to 60% RH with steady air movement that does not blow directly on buds. Use the stem snap test. When a medium stem snaps clean, move to cure.
Grove Bags: After the snap test, bag and seal. No burping and no humidity packs required.
One page checklist
Pull fans and rough trim.
Set up three buckets and test temps.
Wash for about 30 seconds, rinse, rinse (Recipe C: dip, no rinse).
Hang to drip, then dry at 60 to 70°F and 50 to 60% RH.
Stem snap test, then into Grove Bags.
Label and store in a cool dark place.
