ON OUR SHELF · THE HYDRO CORNER
Water on a timer is only as good as the parts it runs through.
Our hydro corner has drip fittings and tubing by the piece, air pumps and stones, a flood-and-drain bucket system, and filters that clean up tap water. Whether you're automating a few pots or building a hydro system, here is what each piece does and the numbers to keep it healthy.

How we stock it at Green Zone
The irrigation wall holds Hydro Flow connectors, valves, adapters and emitters in open bins, with tubing on spools below. Around the corner: FloraFlex fittings, the Active Aqua Grow Flow system, air pumps and stones, and HydroLogic water filters.
Fittings come in a lot of sizes that look alike. Bring the old part, or a photo of it next to a ruler, and we'll match it at the wall.
Drip, flood-and-drain, or water culture, in one paragraph
Drip feeds each pot through tubing and an emitter on a timer, so it works with the pots and mix you already use. Flood-and-drain fills a tray or buckets of clay pebbles, then lets it drain back, on a cycle you set. In water culture the roots hang in the solution itself, and an air pump and stone keep oxygen in it. All three run best in the coco and hydro pH lane, about 5.8 to 6.2, and with the reservoir under about 68°F, because warmer water holds less oxygen.
The lineup

Hydro Flow barbed fittings and tubing
Non-corrosive plastic barbed fittings, elbows and tees for 1/2 inch tubing, made for a watertight, airtight join in irrigation or hydro systems. Sold from the bins on our irrigation wall.
Where it fits: Building or fixing a drip line

FloraFlex drip fittings
FloraFlex's top-drip parts spread water across the top of the pot instead of one spot. Its Matrix Circulator, for example, is a 2.25 inch ring with two barbed nozzles for 1/4 inch tubing that feeds eight channels onto a pad. Ask which FloraFlex pieces are on the shelf.
Where it fits: Top-feeding pots on a timer

Active Aqua Grow Flow (5 gallon, 12 sites)
Twelve 5-gallon bucket modules, each an inner and outer bucket holding about 13 L of clay pebbles. You set the fill and drain cycles and the controller runs them; if the float valve fails, a light comes on and a shut-off valve stops the system. Expands to 24 modules.
Where it fits: A flood-and-drain bucket system

Air pumps and air stones
An air stone puts oxygen into the solution, which the maker says extends its life and keeps roots healthy. Active Aqua's 4-outlet pump, for example, draws 6 W, moves 15 L a minute, and adjusts with a dial.
Where it fits: Water culture, reservoirs and bubblers

HydroLogic smallBoy
A carbon filter that removes up to 99% of chlorine plus sediment and more while leaving beneficial microbes alive, at 60 gallons an hour. Plug and play; the filters last 3,000 gallons.
Where it fits: Taking chlorine out of tap water

HydroLogic stealthRO150
A reverse osmosis system that makes up to 150 gallons a day and cuts dissolved solids by up to 98%. The output is rated at 65 psi and 77°F; colder or lower-pressure water makes less.
Where it fits: Pure water from hard or high-ppm tap water
Specs above are the makers' own. FloraFlex now sells its hardware through shops rather than its own site, and the Hydro Flow figures come from the maker's last published page.
The numbers that keep a hydro system healthy
Keep the reservoir under about 68°F, the pH at about 5.8 to 6.2, and the input EC at about 0.8 to 1.4 in veg and 1.2 to 1.8 in flower. Change pH about 0.2 to 0.3 at a time.
If a pump or air stone stops, act within hours, not days: get oxygen back into the water first, then check the roots. Tan, brown, slimy or sour-smelling roots mean damage has started. That's why we keep a spare air pump and stone on the shelf at home, and why a battery air pump that switches on when the power drops is cheap insurance.
How it fits your grow, in 3 steps
Step 1. Start with the water.
Tap water with chlorine goes through a carbon filter; hard or high-ppm water may want RO. Botanicare, for one, says to always add its Cal-Mag Plus to RO water.
Step 2. Pick the system for the plant count.
A few pots: drip from a reservoir on a timer. More plants, or a cleaner floor: a bucket system like the Grow Flow.
Step 3. Keep air in the water and a spare on the shelf.
Run an air stone in any standing solution, and keep a backup pump.
Who it's for, and who it's not for
A good fit if
You want pots watered on a timer while you're at work or away.
You're building a first hydro system and want the parts to match.
Your tap water is high in chlorine or dissolved solids.
Not the right fit if
You water a few houseplants by hand and that works: keep doing it.
You'll be away for weeks with no one checking: automate gradually and test it while you're home first.
Common mistakes we help people avoid
A warm reservoir. Over about 68°F the water holds less oxygen.
No spare air pump. A dead pump in water culture is an emergency within hours.
Mixed fitting sizes. Barbed fittings are sized to the tubing; 1/2 inch fittings need 1/2 inch tubing.
Big pH moves. Steps of about 0.2 to 0.3, then wait.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an RO filter?
Only if your water calls for it. A carbon filter like the smallBoy handles chlorine; RO is for hard or high-ppm water. Bring a ppm reading if you have one.
Is the Grow Flow hard to set up?
You set the fill and drain cycles and the controller runs it, with a float-valve shut-off as a backup.
Do you sell fittings one at a time?
Yes, from the bins on the irrigation wall. Bring the old part or a photo.
Do you carry HydroHat?
It's been on our hydro pegboard. Call (508) 459-9609 to check.
