BRAND · THE PROPAGATION BAY

A cutting needs three things: a sealed cut, wet air and patience.

Clonex makes the rooting gel, the young-plant feed and the mist that sit together in our propagation bay. Used in order, they take a cutting from the mother plant to a rooted start ready for its first pot. Here is the order, and the room conditions that do the rest.

The seed starting and cloning bay at Green Zone Grow Shops in Worcester, with Clonex gel and Clone Solution

How we stock it at Green Zone

Clonex is in the seed starting and cloning bay: Clone Solution in quarts and gallons, Clonex rooting gel and Clonex Mist, with more boxed on the top shelf. A Clonex gel card also sits on the counter rack.

Cuttings work for more than one kind of plant. The same gel goes on a pothos node, a tomato sucker or a basil tip, and Clonex says the gel is for all plant cuttings, food crops included.

Why the gel matters, in one paragraph

The minute a stem is cut, air starts getting into it. Clonex rooting gel is a water-based gel that stays around the stem, seals the cut tissue and carries rooting hormone right where roots will form. The gel keeps air off the cut, which a powder dip can't do. From there it's the room that roots the cutting: wet air, gentle light and a warm root zone.

Dip the cut end so the gel covers the cut and the stem around it. Pour a little into a cap and dip from that, never from the bottle, and don't pour the leftover back.

Where it fits: The cut

Clonex Clone Solution

Clonex Clone Solution

A gentle 1-0.6-1 feed for clones and seedlings, at 20 mL per gallon (5 mL per quart), in an aeroponic cloner or poured at each watering. It works in hydro, soil, rockwool and soilless mixes. Let it drain well so the starts don't sit wet.

Where it fits: Feeding new cuttings and seedlings

Clonex Mist

Clonex Mist

A foliar mist. Clonex says to mist the mother plant 2 to 3 days before you take cuttings, then lightly mist the new cuttings every 2 days until they go to their first pot. A concentrate version mixes 1 part to 3 parts water.

Where it fits: Mother plant and fresh cuttings

The Clonex labels show a seedling drawing with serrated leaves; we use the maker's bottle shots as small pictures only.

The room that roots a cutting

Keep the air wet under a dome, about 80 to 95% humidity for the first days, then step it down toward 65 to 75% as roots show. Light should be gentle, about 100 to 200 µmol/m²/s at the tops, and the root zone warm, about 68 to 75°F. A seedling heat mat and a dome on a shelf light covers all three.

How it fits your grow, in 3 steps

Step 1. Prep the mother.

Mist the mother plant with Clonex Mist 2 to 3 days before you cut.

Step 2. Cut, dip, set.

Take a clean cut, dip it in the gel and set it straight into a pre-soaked cube, plug or cloner.

Step 3. Feed lightly and wait.

Water with Clone Solution, mist every couple of days, and keep the dome humid. When roots show, step the humidity down and pot up.

Who it's for, and who it's not for

A good fit if

  • You want more of a plant you already have: a houseplant, a tomato, a mother in the tent.

  • You're starting seedlings and want a gentle first feed.

  • You run an aeroponic cloner and want a solution made for it.

Not the right fit if

  • You want to skip the dome and the light: no gel roots a cutting in dry air.

  • You only grow from seed and never take cuttings: the Clone Solution alone may be all you need.

Common mistakes we help people avoid

Dipping straight from the bottle. It spoils the rest of the gel. Pour a little out and toss what's left.

Keeping cuttings soaked. Wet air, yes; a waterlogged cube, no. Drain well.

Too much light too soon. Unrooted cuttings can't drink much yet. Keep it gentle until roots show.
