ON OUR SHELF · THE LIGHTING WALL AND BACK STOCK

Buy the light for the space, then hang it by the number.

Our lighting wall and back stock hold LED bars and boards for tents, T5-style lights for seedlings and shelves, and ceramic fixtures for rooms. The right one depends on the footprint you're lighting and what's growing under it. Here is how to choose, and how to hang it so the plants get what they need.

How we stock it at Green Zone

A few fixtures hang on the lighting display wall so you can see their size. Most of the stock is boxed in the lighting bay and back stock: NextLight, FloraFlex, AC Infinity, HLG and ThinkGrow LEDs, Sun Blaze and AgroLED seedling lights, Sun System and Gavita for bigger rooms.

Bring the inside size of your tent or shelf and what you grow. A light is the biggest single purchase in most setups, and the box on the shelf is often not the one you need: ask, and we'll check the back.

Watts, lumens and PPFD, in one paragraph

Watts tell you what a light draws from the wall, and lumens are measured for human eyes, so neither tells you what the plant can use. Plants use one band of light for photosynthesis, called PAR. PPF is how much of it a fixture puts out each second, and PPFD is how much of it actually reaches the leaves, which is the number that matters, read at the top of the plants. A maker's efficacy number (µmol/J) tells you how much plant light you get for each watt, so it's the fair way to compare two LEDs.

The lineup

NextLight Core (commercial series)

NextLight Core (commercial series)

A 190 W full-spectrum white LED. NextLight rated it for a 3 by 3 foot flowering area or a 4 by 4 foot veg area, at 2.0 PPF per watt, with a five-year warranty.

Where it fits: A 3 by 3 flower tent or a 4 by 4 veg tent

FloraFlex 700W full spectrum LED

FloraFlex 700W full spectrum LED

A 700 W bar fixture that FloraFlex rates at 2.7 µmol/J, covering 4 by 4 feet in bloom and 5 by 5 in veg. It dims with a 0 to 10 V controller and carries a five-year warranty.

Where it fits: A 4 by 4 flower tent or 5 by 5 veg

AC Infinity LED grow lights

AC Infinity LED grow lights

IONFRAME bars and IONBOARD boards with full-spectrum LEDs, dimmable from 0 to 100%. The IONFRAME EVO4 covers 4 by 4 feet in veg and 3 by 3 in flower, and the lights join the same controller as AC Infinity's fans. Ask which size is in the box.

Where it fits: Tents already run by an AC Infinity controller

Sun Blaze T5 LED 48

Sun Blaze T5 LED 48

A 4 foot, 8-lamp fixture that takes LED lamps in the T5 shape, with 41 W lamps rated 4,900 lumens at 5500 K, a color made for propagation and veg. The maker says it uses up to 25% less power than the old T5 tubes.

Where it fits: Seedlings, cuttings and veg on a shelf

AgroLED Sun 411 Veg

AgroLED Sun 411 Veg

A veg fixture with three channels, blue, UV and 6500 K white, each switched on its own, at 284 W with all three on. It daisy-chains on 120 V and hangs flat or on edge.

Where it fits: Propagation and veg

Sun System LEC 315

Sun System LEC 315

A light emitting ceramic fixture with the 315 W ceramic lamp included, in a 3100 K or 4200 K color, rated for 20,000 hours. Some models daisy-chain.

Where it fits: A room or a tall tent, warm light

Specs above are the makers' own. Two of these makers no longer keep the page live (NextLight's Core and FloraFlex's 700W, now the 900W), so the numbers come from their last published page. Check the box at the counter.

Hang it by the number, not the inch

Different stages want different light. We aim for about 200 to 300 µmol/m²/s for seedlings, 300 to 600 in veg, and 600 to 900 in flower. Most LEDs land about 12 to 24 inches above the plants, but set the height by the reading or the maker's chart, not by a ruler. Change one thing at a time, raise the light 4 to 6 inches or dim it 10 to 20%, then give it 2 to 3 days and judge the new growth.

For seedlings on a shelf, tubes and T5-style LEDs run cool enough to sit a few inches above the trays. University of Maryland's extension adds that LEDs save a little on power, but seedlings grown under them are unlikely to beat those grown under fluorescent tubes.

How it fits your grow, in 3 steps

Step 1. Measure the footprint.

The inside width and depth of the tent or shelf decides the size of light, and the height decides whether it fits with room to raise it.

Step 2. Match the light to the stage.

Seedlings and cuttings need a gentle T5-style light. Plants that will flower in a tent need an LED rated for that footprint in flower. Rooms and tall tents are where LEC and the big commercial bars come in.

Step 3. Set the hours and the height.

Run about 18 hours on and 6 off for veg, and 12 and 12 with an unbroken dark period to flower plants that need it. Then hang it by the PPFD reading and adjust one step at a time.

Who it's for, and who it's not for

A good fit if

  • You're starting seeds or cuttings on a shelf: a T5-style light.

  • You grow in a 2 by 2 to 5 by 5 tent: an LED rated for that footprint.

  • You keep houseplants or vegetables under lights through the winter.

Not the right fit if

  • You need a light for a room bigger than a tent and haven't measured it: measure first, then come talk to us.

  • You only want the highest wattage on the shelf: a light too strong for the space just means hanging it higher or dimming it.

Common mistakes we help people avoid

Buying by watts. Compare µmol/J and the maker's coverage instead.

Hanging by a number someone posted. Every fixture spreads light differently. Use the maker's chart or a reading.

Full power on young plants. Seedlings and fresh cuttings want far less light than flowering plants.

Two changes at once. Move the light or dim it, then wait 2 to 3 days.

Frequently asked questions

What size light for a 4 by 4 tent?

One rated by its maker for 4 by 4 in the stage you'll run longest. The FloraFlex 700W is rated 4 by 4 in bloom; the NextLight Core is rated 3 by 3 in flower and 4 by 4 in veg.

Do I need a light meter?

It helps. PPFD measured at the tops of the plants is the number to hang by. Without one, start with the maker's chart and watch the top leaves.

T5 or LED for seedlings?

Either works. Tubes and T5-style LEDs both run cool enough to sit close to the trays, and LEDs use less power.

Do you carry HID or ceramic bulbs and reflectors?

Yes, in the lighting bay: Sun System LEC fixtures and Gavita reflectors. Call (508) 459-9609 to check a lamp or reflector before you drive.
