ON OUR SHELF · THE TENT SHELF

Measure the ceiling before you pick the tent.

We stock grow tents from Gorilla Grow Tent and Secret Jardin, from 3 by 3 up to 5 by 5 and 4 by 8, plus short tents for basements and attics. The footprint decides how many plants fit. The height decides whether they finish. Here is how to pick both.

Gorilla Grow Tent and Secret Jardin tent boxes on the tent shelf at Green Zone Grow Shops in Worcester

How we stock it at Green Zone

Tents live boxed on the tent shelf: Gorilla Grow Tent Pro and Shorty, and Secret Jardin Dark Room and Dark Street. Sizes in stock change, so call before you drive for one exact size.

Most tent regrets we hear about are about height, not width. Once the pot, the light and the room the light needs are inside, a tent is shorter than the number on the box. Bring your ceiling height and we'll do the math with you at the counter.

Usable height, in one paragraph

Usable height is the tent's height minus the pot and minus the gap the light needs above the plants. Most LEDs hang about 12 to 24 inches above the canopy. Plants that are switched to flower keep growing: about 1.5 to 2 times their height for compact plants and 2 to 3 times for stretchy ones, mostly in the first 2 to 3 weeks. That is why we switch at about half the usable height. A taller tent buys you more weeks of growth before that switch.

The lineup

Gorilla Grow Tent Pro (3 by 3, 4 by 4, 5 by 5)

Gorilla Grow Tent Pro (3 by 3, 4 by 4, 5 by 5)

1680D canvas on a steel frame rated for a 300 lb hanging load. Every Pro includes a 1 ft height extension, taking it from 7 to 8 ft, and a 2 ft kit takes it to 8 ft 11 in. Six 11 inch double-cinching duct ports and two 3 inch electrical ports.

Where it fits: Standard ceilings, and room to grow taller

Gorilla Grow Tent Shorty (3 by 3 and 4 by 8)

Gorilla Grow Tent Shorty (3 by 3 and 4 by 8)

4 ft 11 in tall, or 5 ft 8 in with the 9 inch extension in the box, in the same 1680D fabric. It also takes the 2 ft extension, but the door opening stays the same height. Gorilla no longer lists the Shorty, so what's on our shelf is what there is.

Where it fits: Basements, attics and low ceilings

Gorilla Grow Tent Pro 2 ft extension kit

Gorilla Grow Tent Pro 2 ft extension kit

Telescoping pole sections that add height to a Pro tent. Use the 1 ft kit from the box or the 2 ft kit alone, or stack them, and the extra space keeps the light's heat up away from the plants. Kits are sized to the tent, so bring the tent size.

Where it fits: When the plants outgrow the tent

Secret Jardin Dark Room DR150

Secret Jardin Dark Room DR150

150 by 150 by 217 cm (5 ft by 5 ft by 85 inches), 400D Mylar canvas on 25 mm stainless steel poles, with a double-flap zip Secret Jardin calls 100% lightproof and access from the front, back and sides.

Where it fits: A 5 by 5 that seals tight

Specs above are the makers' own. Gorilla's tent sizes are outside dimensions with an inside floor to match: the 4 by 4 Pro has a 48 by 48 inch floor. We also carry Secret Jardin's smaller Dark Street tents; ask which size is on the shelf.

Footprint: room for the plants and for your arms

Pick the footprint for the plants at full size, not as seedlings. A canopy about 60 to 75% filled at the switch to flower is the target we steer by, so leave space for that growth. Then check you can reach the back corners: a 4 by 8 or a 5 by 5 needs doors on more than one side.

Airtight tents need a way for fresh air in. Secret Jardin says to leave an intake open when the exhaust runs, because the tent is airtight enough to pull its walls in. Fans, filters and ducting are on our Tent airflow page: Tent airflow.

How it fits your grow, in 3 steps

Step 1. Measure the space.

Ceiling height first, then the floor, then the door you'll carry the box through. Leave room above the tent to raise the poles if it takes an extension.

Step 2. Work out usable height.

Tent height, minus the pot, minus 12 to 24 inches for the light. Plan to switch to flower at about half of what's left.

Step 3. Pick the footprint, then the light.

Choose the footprint for the plants at full size, then a light rated for that footprint: /learn/grow-lights. Fans and filters come last: /learn/tent-airflow.

Who it's for, and who it's not for

A good fit if

  • You're starting your first indoor grow and want light, air and spills kept in one place.

  • You have a basement or attic with a low ceiling: a Shorty.

  • You want room to add height later: a Gorilla Pro takes a 2 ft extension.

Not the right fit if

  • You only start seedlings or cuttings on a shelf: a shelf light does that without a tent (Grow lights).

  • You haven't measured the ceiling: measure first, then pick.

Common mistakes we help people avoid

Buying by footprint alone. A tall plant in a short tent runs out of room under the light. Do the usable height math first.

Forgetting the light's own height. The fixture and its hangers take space above the gap it needs.

Sealing the tent with no intake. An airtight tent with only an exhaust pulls its walls in.

Packing it full on day one. Plants fill a lot more of the floor by the switch.

Frequently asked questions

What size tent do I need?

The footprint for the plants at full size and a height that leaves room for the pot, the light and the stretch. Gorilla says a 4 by 4 fits 4 to 6 large plants in 5 to 7 gallon pots. Bring your ceiling height and how many plants you plan to run, and we'll match a size.

Can I make a tent taller later?

On a Gorilla Pro, yes: the 1 ft extension is in the box and a 2 ft kit takes it to 8 ft 11 in.

What's a Shorty for?

Low ceilings. It stands 4 ft 11 in, 5 ft 8 in with its 9 inch extension.

Do you carry the fans and filters too?

Yes, in the fan and filter bays next to the tents. See Tent airflow, or call 508-459-9609.
